New House in North America

Now a days, Architects lost their role in domesticity and small project which is dominant part in architecture. The mass media and magazines encourage Do-it-yourself culture and produce many star designers who is interior designer and contractor but architect. Architects are apart from dominant daily subject in North America.

On the other hand, Asia has a different soical cognition about the architect. The role of architect is very important in all design process. Especially in small house project, their role as a space designer is indispensable. For example, japanese house is all about function and transformation not only because of their culture but also their limitation of space. To create efficient space in small and limited space, it is essential to have an architect. And this compact and transformative house suggests a possibility of new house which focuses on single family, eco-friendly, and energy efficiency.

Compare with Asia, North America has a huge land where people can build big houses. However, now it is a time to consider about environmental aspect which is a big issue. Technologically developed and transformable multi-function house could be the next house in North America. Just like LeCorbusier's "The house is machine for living in." or Archigram's machin like future architecture.

A Typical Japanese Architecture Curriculum and Faculty lists

Design and Architecture
As a result of the recent amalgamation of the industrial design and architecture departments, a new department embracing broadened interests in art, science, and technology has been created. Being one of the largest departments of design and architecture in a national university, the department provides a comprehensive set of introductory and advanced classes and conducts extensive research activities.
What makes Japanese architectural education unique in the world is that it covers all areas from architectural design to structural engineering, i.e., it incorporates arts and sciences corresponding to the whole professional field of the building industry. The School of Architecture has two divisions; Architectural and Environmental Planning and Structural Design of Buildings, each of which consists of several sections focusing on specific fields.

Curriculum
The curriculum of this department is separated into two courses, because of the need to train specialists in each course. These courses are the industrial and media design course and the architectural course. Each course needs 124 units for graduation, including general subjects such as language and mathematics.

Industrial and Media Design Course
The Design School offers introductory classes of theoretical lectures, practical studio work, and laboratory experimentation throughout the early stages of the four-year program. Through experience, the students are expected to acquire an appreciation of, and ability in, the full scope of artistic and scientific activities that comprise industrial and media design. As the course progresses, the students gradually focus on an area of specialization in accordance with their interests and intended future career. Having successfully completed the introductory and advanced classes, students are required to undertake either an extended design or a research project during semesters 6, 7, and 8 for completion of their bachelor degrees.

(A) Industrial Design Division
The aims of this division are the study and teaching of Ergonomics, Material Planning, Physiological Anthropology, Design Planning, Environmental Design Presentation Methods, Product Design Fundamentals, and so on.

(B) Communication Design Division
This division provides the following classes: Culture of Design, Theory of Design Fundamentals, two and three dimensional design including Tableau and Sculpture, Theory of Communication Media Design, Theory and Practice of Computer Graphics, Color Science, Visual Perception, and so on.

Architectural Course
The School of Architecture provides the four-year curriculum of the architectural course. It is designed to guide students in the earlier years to take more introductory classes as well as the general subjects provided for all students. The core subjects include Architectural Design, in which students learn how to design buildings of various types, Structural Mechanics and Strength of Materials. In the final year, students are assigned a graduation project of either design or research, which they must complete to graduate. The department accepts a growing number of students from overseas, many of whom choose to continue to study in the post-graduate-course.

(A) Division for Architectural and Environmental Planning
The aims of this division are the study and teaching of history, architectural design, building physics, urban design, and so on. Studio design projects are compulsory, and they cover major building types and include one group project to design a district made up of a complex of buildings.

(B) Division for Structural Design of Buildings
The undergraduate education of Structural Engineering is divided into the three major fields of the discipline; i.e., Structural Mechanics, Structural Design of Buildings, and Building Materials. Advanced classes on specific subjects such as Vibration Engineering, Foundation Engineering, and Fireproof Engineering are open to students in later semesters.
